Helen Kuumbi

Drawing, painting

"I explore our landscape with paint and pen; its rythms, changes and stories. I create artwork that conveys the landscape as an active and layered entity: tracing its ancient past and seeking awe in nature"

Helen is a contemporary landscape and seascape painter. She works in oils, acrylics and natural inks. Her work explores the narrative of the landscape - its natural and human history. She is self-taught painter, beginning painting after a career in mental health. Her visual practice now compliments her work in folk music and woodland management.

Helens first solo show was in 2019 at the Devonport Guildhall, Plymouth. She has exhibited in a number of group shows in Bristol, Devon and Cornwall since and regularly runs open studio events. In 2024, she had a residency at Bellever, Dartmoor which has focused her current practice on ancient monuments.

Helens visual art is infused with strong rhythm, movement and place. Her paintings are meditations on land as a living archive – beautiful, vast and never still.

My Current Practice:

Walking with Stones’ is a visual art project exploring and interrogating our modern day relationship with the ancient sites of Dartmoor and Cornwall and further).  Through walking, painting and drawing, I explore the interaction between monuments, landscape, and people.

My research and practice has been considering the relationship between human-built and natural features, whether this conceptual division can change, and the material qualities of the built and natural elements.
I have also been exploring how our experience of ancient monuments can foster feelings of connectivity with the past; seeing the people that built them.

Paintings and drawings from this project will be on show at my open studio.
