To Zennor (III)

One of a series of four paintings inspired by the coast path between St Ives and Zennor. The walk along the cliffs and boulder-strewn coastal path has the sea as a backdrop, always beautiful and often turquoise. Painted in oil and pigments, with cold wax, rock powder and glazes adding texture, the palette of the painting is mainly hues of blues and greens with ochre. Unframed on canvas, with paint continuing around the edges.

Shining Through the Rocks (II)

'Shining Through the Rocks (II)' forms a diptych with 'Shining Through the Rocks (I)', and both are available separately. If purchased together, they work well hung together or separately. The works were inspired by the rocks of the West Penwith area west of St Ives: the coast path, the dark sea, and the glorious colours of the coast. They also reflect the colours and textures of some of the ancient rocks of this stretch of coast. I wanted them to have a raw energy about them. Rich in texture, the work was painted in oil and pigments over an acrylic base layer, with cold wax and rock powders adding body to the paint mix. Expressive mark-making results in an aged patina. Unframed on stretcher bars with the painting continuing around the edges.

Porthcurno Calling (II)

One of a trio of works inspired by the beautiful granite coast around Porthcurno. The area is characterised by granite boulders and turquoise sea and is renowned for being the place from which in 1870, the early submarine telegraph cables were placed, linking the UK with India. One of a series of works inspired by walks on Porth Kidney beach near St Ives, as the light fades. It's a peaceful, quiet beach, a mile long, with beautiful views over the Heyl estuary to Gwithian and Godrevy Lighthouse. The backdrop to the beach is cliffs with rocks which are around 350 million years old. In oil, cold wax, pigment and rock powder on wood panel, the work is textured in grey hues with light blue and purple undertones. One of three works made in oil, pigments, cold wax and rock powder on aluminium panels, painted in response to walks around the old mining sites between Cape Cornwall and Pendeen on the West Penwith Coast in Winter 2024. Botallack Mine in particular, with its chimney stacks perched on the cliffs and the ancient arsenic smelter, enables visitors to walk in the footsteps of the mine workers. Now part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, in its heydey the mine and its workings extended for half a mile under the sea. 1.5 million tonnes of mining waste were dumped in the sea. Framed, floating in white St Ives tray frame, framed size 60 x 60 x 3.5 cm.
