Catherine Harvey Jefferson

Drawing, painting, printmaking

Catherine is a third generation painter from the Harvey family & her work, mostly landscape based, stems from drawings made whilst travelling, walking and sailing.

Her practice has been developed over many decades and very much energised by invitations to work in other countries where the painting has taken life from the elemental forces encountered.

Drawing is her way of remembering and recording to become the basis of her studio work.

Find Catherine in her new studio in Perranuthnoe.

Further information

Catherine’s paintings taken from studies made in extraordinary and remote places embody her deep connection with the landscape and her synesthetic use of colour.
Catherine works from a painting studio on the North Cornish coast with a distant view of the Isles of Scilly as well her new print studio and showcase in Perranuthnoe. She is a sailor and much of her work stems from her lifetime of being at sea on her own boat Verity in Cornwall or sailing with Family and Friends in remote locations around the world.
She is constantly drawing, making colour notes in watercolour and oil bar as part of the process of absorbing a place, a feeling, a memory,  aiding the recall when the paintings are made in the studio.
Catherine’s work gives just enough visual connection to place to pull the viewer into her world of dynamic, abstract, delicious colour and allows space for the viewer to embark on their own journey within the painting.
Catherine is a third generation painter and the second generation to be trained at Falmouth School of Art from there onto a degree in Fine Art Painting at Winchester School of Art.
Recent work is about sailing on Scotland’s West coast with the crew from Eda Frandsen where she taught landscape painting on board and more recently an adventure out to Cape Clear Island across Roaring Water Bay in her beloved Ireland.
Catherine’s travels have taken her into the Arctic Circle and south to the mountains in Patagonia, tramping in NewZealand up to the snowline of Mount Cook and face to face with glacial melt water.
There is an intensity and urgency in her love letters to nature
Catherine’s work is in collections all over the globe.
