Roberta Hopkins

Mixed media, painting, printmaking

Originally training as a graphic designer, and more recently enjoying a successful business as a jewellery designer, I have been working with print and paint since lockdown.

My inspiration comes from the weathering and erosion of natural materials, the colours and textures of the rocks and pebbles I see whilst walking the coast path. I’m interested in how shapes fit together, the patterns in a stone wall, the boulders in a tor, the fields on a hillside. When I’m out walking I’m usually looking down at the cracks in the pavement or the rocks and stones under my feet.

I taking endless photographs of the details that catch my eye and it is these that inform my work back in the studio. Using acrylics and mixed media on board, I work abstractly, often incorporating collage pieces that I have printed myself with natural textures and repeat patterns. I work in many layers of paint, textured gels and collage which are then sanded back and scratched into to reveal previous layers with unexpected results, which echo the erosion and passing of time of the natural landscape.

I have also been developing my love of monoprinting with a Gelli plate and I am now enjoying teaching workshops to beginners.

Or park by the river and go under the medieval archway, over the crossroads and trurn immediately left. I am the first house on the right up a short hill.
