Pamela Barber-Hickey

Watercolour, acrylic, pen and pyrography

A self taught artist, I originally felt more comfortable doing pen and pencil drawings....thus might be also due to having been a draughtsman for 20 years from leaving school, everything had to be perfectly set out....and colour seemed to frighten me a little for some reason. I attended watercolour evening classes when in my 20's to learn more about painting and colour work and how I could merge it i to my style.

Over the years it has been a hobby that I have revisited. It was during covid when I was still working (on construction sites), I fell back in love with drawing and painting, experimenting with acrylics as well as watercolour. After finally moving down to West Cornwall  3 years ago and indulging in having a shed built that I could use as an art studio,  I have been able to further experiment with materials and explore the inspirational landscape around me.

In the last year I have also started doing pyrography....something which I am enjoying greatly....as great care is needed with little room for error....I treat it as another type of pen to outline and shade my intended image.

I love detail in the landscape....my biggest challenge is to infer the image without getting bogged down in overworking the image....gradually I am relaxing my approach when I paint amd draw...to produce uncomplicated works.
