I enjoy working in a variety of clays, creating pieces that are functional and/or sculptural for both inside and outdoors.
My thrown work is in white stoneware or terracotta. I decorate pieces with a range of slips, underglazes, clear and coloured glazes. I take inspiration from my surroundings, creating initial sketches and paintings in a variety of literal and abstracted styles which are then transposed onto my clay work.
My hand built works are mostly sculptural abstracted figures which are made in moments of calm. Some are highly burnished and smoke fired to leave the raw clay uniquely patterned, polished and tactile. Others are decorated with monochrome or coloured brush marks. Those designed for outdoor use are shaped in frost proof crank clay.
